Ryan Tannehill absent from Miami Dolphins' first practice

Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill, still unsigned, missed the Miami Dolphins' first practice of training camp Friday, but was working out with former NFL quarterback Chris Weinke, NFL.com and NFL Network reporter Jeff Darlington reports.

Tannehill is working out at the IMG Football Academy in Bradenton, Fla., south of St. Petersburg. The Dolphins are making progress in their negotiations with Tannehill, and the two sides are hopeful a deal will be made so the No. 8 overall draft pick can join his team at Dolphins facilities in Davie within days -- and possibly even as early as Saturday, according to source with knowledge of the situation.

Tannehill is the first quarterback selected in the first round by the Dolphins since they took Dan Marino in 1983.

Rapoport: What's the holdup?

The new CBA was supposed to make rookie deals easy. Why are most of the top picks unsigned? Ian Rapoport explains. **More ...**

"He's obviously not here, so we're not done yet," general manager Jeff Ireland told reporters after practice. "Progress is being made. It's progressing, I should say. Communication is ongoing on both sides, from Pat and our group."

Tannehill is expected to be part of a competition for the starting job along with returning starter Matt Moore and veteran offseason acquisition David Garrard.

"It's disappointing when you don't have all your players in, regardless of who it is," Ireland said. "You want to have all your players out there. Things are progressing and we're going to keep communicating until we get this thing done."
