On Sunday, NFL Media columnist Michael Silver reported Robert Griffin III requested that his poor plays not be shown in team meetings.
Coach Mike Shanahan immediately denied the allegation. RGIII parroted his coach's comments after the Washington Redskins' 27-6 loss Monday to the San Francisco 49ers.
"It's false," Griffin said, per The Washington Post. "That's why I didn't respond to it, because it's no need to respond to untrue things. It's what coach said it was, 'completely false.' People trying to character assassinate me, and it's unfortunate."
Griffin's play has been heavily scrutinized this season after returning from ACL surgery. His every word seems to be parsed and dissected, which has led to more criticism off the field for the young quarterback.
Shanahan said Monday that he doesn't believe the controversies swirling around Redskins Park affected the team in the blowout loss.
"It really doesn't bother the players," the coach said. "They understand there are going to be a lot of things that are going on, but the football team has to focus because there is a job at hand."
Whether or not the Redskins were affected by distractions doesn't change the fact that Shanahan's team got blown out at home in a must-win game on national television.
