NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Washington Redskins pass-rusher is out for the rest of 2014 with the pectoral injury he suffered in Sunday'swin over the Tennessee Titans, per a source informed of the situation. The team is planning to place him on injured reserve.
It's a crushing blow for Orakpo, who has suffered two torn pectoral muscles on his left side in the past. This time, the outside linebacker tore his right pectoral, cutting off a campaign that saw him notch just half a sack over seven starts.
Making $11.455 million under the franchise tag, Orakpo's run with the team might be over. Washington's 2009 first-round draft pick has 40 sacks over 71 starts and was seen as a key contributor this season, but he isn't the team's only priority.
With productive pass-rusher Ryan Kerrigan set to become a free agent after next season, the Redskins might choose to allocate their big money in that direction while developing rookie Trent Murphy.
Still just 28 years old, Orakpo is a Pro Bowl-pedigree player with an NFL future; we just expect it to unfold somewhere outside our nation's capital.
