QB Chad Kelly, Jim's nephew and an Ole Miss signee, arrested

Junior college quarterback Chad Kelly, the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, signed with Mississippi last week, but the union might be short-lived.

Kelly (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) was arrested early Sunday outside a Buffalo bar. A Buffalo News story said a police report said Kelly told bouncers at the bar that "I'm going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place."

Further, the News reported, Kelly later was "forcibly removed" from a vehicle, with a police report saying Kelly kicked and tried to swing at officers as they removed him from the vehicle. The police report also said Kelly resisted getting into a police car, then later struggled with staff when he was booked.

The newspaper reported that Kelly "faces multiple charges including third-degree assault, second-degree harassment, second-degree menacing, resisting arrest, fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree obstructing governmental administration."

A lawyer for Kelly commented on the case on Monday.

"It's obvious Chad was not the one who started this incident," Thomas Eoannou told The Associated Press.

Eoannou also said that a video of the incident does not include evidence of Kelly threatening to get an AK-47.

Kelly was a high school star in the Buffalo area and signed with Clemson in the 2012 recruiting class. He was dismissed from Clemson last spring and signed with East Mississippi CC; he threw for 3,905 yards, 47 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Lions, who went 12-0 and beat Iowa Western for the NJCAA national title.

Mississippi said in a statement Monday that it is gathering facts about the incident.

Rebels starting quarterback Bo Wallace is a senior, and Kelly was expected to contend for the starting job during spring practice with holdovers Ryan Buchanan and DeVante Kincade, both of whom are redshirt freshman this season.
