Former Cincinnati Bengals safety Reggie Nelson will visit Oakland, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the free agent's plans.
Nelson, 32, earned his first Pro Bowl selection in nine NFL seasons after tying for the league lead with eight interceptions last year. The Bengals are moving on because 2013 third-round pick Shawn Williams is ready to step into the starting lineup opposite George Iloka.
At No. 22, Nelson is the highest remaining player on Around The NFL's list of the Top 99 free agents.
General manager Reggie McKenzie has done a commendable job of upgrading Jack Del Rio's defense, signing cornerback Sean Smith away from the division-rival Chiefs and adding outside linebacker Bruce Irvin. The Raiders also reportedly reached agreement with suspended edge rusher Aldon Smith, who is ineligible to apply for reinstatement before Nov. 17.
If McKenzie lands Nelson, it would go a long way toward upgrading a secondary that was too often burned by tight ends last season.
