The Indianapolis Colts are not expected to work out a contract extension with coach Chuck Pagano prior to the start of the 2015 season, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday.
On Friday, Pagano released a statement that suggests he's simultaneously not worried about his contract situation and not planning on coaching any team but the Colts.
"Be where your feet are," Pagano wrote, per the Indy Star. "What do I mean? Cancer taught me to be thankful for today. All I'm concentrating on is today. Then tomorrow. My focus right now is on the draft, bringing in players that can help us continue to grow, get better, and continue to 'Build the Monster.' I look forward to coaching the Colts this season and for many years to come."
Under Pagano, the Colts have earned three straight playoff bids with 11-5 records and two straight AFC South division titles. The coach missed the majority of 2012 while battling cancer, as interim coach Bruce Arians won Coach of the Year honors.
Part of the issue, per Rapoport's report, is that due to the illness the team has had only two full seasons to judge Pagano's coaching dexterity. With key veteran additions this season, Pagano will have a chance to prove he deserves a long-term deal.
At this stage, the coach isn't ready to fret about the future.
