Oshiomogho Atogwe's contract reflects reduced role

Before he was released by the Washington Redskins, safety Oshiomogho Atogwe was scheduled to earn $4 million in total compensation in 2012, the second season of a five-year, $26 million contract he had signed prior to the 2011 lockout. However, the contract he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles offered much less, which could be an indication of a reduced role for the seven-year veteran in Philly.

Atogwe languished on the free-agent market until signing with the Eagles last week. Atogwe adds veteran depth and leadership behind projected starters Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen, as well as 2011 second-round pick Jaiquawn Jarrett.

According to a source with knowledge of Atogwe's contract details, the veteran received nothing up front to sign with the team. Atogwe is scheduled to earn the league minimum base salary of $825,000, of which $100,000 is fully guaranteed.

Atogwe can also earn up to $100,000 in per game roster bonuses ($6,250 per game) and $225,000 in undisclosed incentives. Overall, the deal is worth a maximum of $1.15 million, which is considerably less than what he was scheduled to receive from the Redskins.

His deal with the Redskins, which was terminated in March, included $500,000 in roster bonuses, a $100,000 workout bonus and a $3.4 million base salary in that contract.
