INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts placed veteran defensive tackle Anthony McFarland on injured reserve Thursday, ending his season two days after he underwent knee surgery to repair his patella tendon.
The 300-pound McFarland was an important contributor in the Colts' run to a Super Bowl title last season, and coach Tony Dungy had acknowledged this week that the team's biggest run-stuffer was likely to be out for at least months.
McFarland, who was obtained in a trade from Tampa last season, left the field early during Friday's training camp workout. The Colts have not said which knee he injured.
Possible replacements for McFarland include rookies Quinn Pitcock, a third-round draft pick from Ohio State, and Keyunta Dawson, a seventh-round pick.
In other moves, the Colts signed rookies Victor Worsley, a linebacker from North Carolina, and Travis Leitko, a defensive end from Notre Dame, team spokesman Craig Kelley said.
