A second-round draft pick out of Oregon in 2009, Unger started and logged every snap in all 16 games as a rookie for the Seahawks, mostly playing at right guard before finishing the season at center. Unger opened 2010 as the Seahawks' starting right guard, but he suffered a toe injury that landed him on injured reserve.

Unger assumed the Seahawks' starting center duties in 2011 and started 15 games, missing one game (a 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns) with a foot injury.

Financial terms weren't disclosed, but 6-foot-5, 305-pound Unger was scheduled to earn $565,000 in 2012, the final year of his four-year, $3.214 million rookie contract.

In our team-by-team salary-cap series, we listed Chris Clemons and Unger as two of the bigger contract issues that were looming for the Seahawks in 2013. General manager John Schneider has crossed both items off his to-do list before the team even reports to training camp.

UPDATE: "(Head coach) Pete (Carroll) and I are excited to lock up a young core leader on our offense," Seahawks general manager John Schneider told the team's official website. "Max's consistent and professional approach to his job transcends the locker room and the huddle."

Unger also said he was pleased with his extension.

"I am very happy about this new deal," Unger said. "We have a developing young line that had some success last year that we can build upon this season. It's a good deal for the both of us and I couldn't be happier to be in Seattle."
