Matt Ryan vs Drew Brees top tough Week 9 calls

The regular season is here. That means all of your roster decisions now come with significantly more gravitas. Every choice you make from here on out comes with a lot more consequences. That means it's important that you make the right call. In that case, it's good that you're here for Make the Right Call. What a coincidence, eh?

Who should I start: Matt Ryan or Drew Brees?

I'd say Matt Ryan has been underwhelming this season, but in reality he's just been Matt Ryan. The Falcons quarterback has always been an up-and-down prospect and he's just reminding us of that this season. The good news is that he can exploit good matchups and he has arguably the best matchup possible against the dysfunctional 49ers. Of course, Drew Brees nearly doubled his season touchdown total with last week's seven scoring tosses against the Giants. However the Titans haven't been so forgiving. Look for Brees to come back to Earth this week. Start Matty Ice.

Should I add Steve Johnson or Malcom Floyd?

Now that Keenan Allen is out for the rest of the season, who will step up and take the bulk of his targets. The easiest answer is Stevie Johnson. Part of the reason that Johnson was considered such a sleeper at the start of the season is that he does many of the same things that Allen does and worked as a great complement to the Chargers' No. 1 wideout. There is some value with Floyd, but he's mostly a deeper threat for a team whose offensive line isn't consistent enough for its quarterback to get the ball downfield frequently.

Should I trade Amari Cooper and DeMarco Murray for Todd Gurley?

I've become enamored with Amari Cooper and the Raiders offense all season long. I don't have nearly the same level of attachment to DeMarco Murray. Through it all, I couldn't be any higher on Todd Gurley. If there is any chance to acquire him in a season where productive running backs are so hard to come by, you do it by any means necessary. You have to give up something to get something, so this is a pretty even deal.

Who should I start: Ronnie Hillman or Jeremy Langford?

I've been on record as saying I don't want anything to do with the Denver Broncos backfield. Ronnie Hillman is nominally the team's lead back but I don't have a lot of faith in him -- even against the Colts. C.J. Anderson showed some things last week and could earn more touches this week. With Matt Forte out of action for the Bears, Langford is going to become Chicago's workhorse back. Who else is there to challenge for touches? Ka'Deem Carey? Antone Smith? I think not. That's really good news against the woeful Chargers run defense. Langford is my choice for this week.

Should I drop Julius Thomas or Jason Witten?

You're probably not going to be able to survive with just one of these tight ends for the remainder of the season. So if you're looking at this longterm, Jason Witten has the better extended value. It might not seem that way right now with the Cowboys offense struggling so much. But Tony Romo will be back soon, which is very good news for the veteran tight end. The two have worked well together for years. Even more, Witten has a much more favorable schedule down the stretch and into the playoffs. If you're forced to choose one, it should be Witten.
