University of Louisville co-offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway received information about Wake Forest's game plan in advance of the Cardinals' 44-12 win over the Demon Deacons last month, UL announced on Wednesday. Galloway shared the information, leaked to him by Wake Forest radio announcer Tommy Elrod, with UL's defensive staff, per UL.
UL athletic director Tom Jurich confirmed Galloway's role Wednesday in a bizarre story that began when a member of Wake Forest's traveling party to Louisville found documents from the Wake Forest game plan at UL's Papa John's Stadium the day before the teams played on Nov. 12. Wake Forest's investigation resulted in the firing of Elrod on Tuesday, who allegedly provided or attempted to provide game-plan information on multiple occasions since 2014.
"Our offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway and Tommy Elrod have known each other since 2007. Lonnie received a call from Elrod during the week of the Wake Forest game, and some information was shared with him that week," Jurich stated in a release. "Among the communication were a few plays that were sent and then shared with our defensive staff. None of the special plays were run during the course of the game. Our defense regularly prepares for similar formations every week in their normal game plan. Any other information that may have been discussed was nothing that our staff had not already seen while studying Wake Forest in their preparations for the game, and the material was not given any further attention. I'm disappointed that this issue has brought undue attention to our football staff as we prepare for our upcoming bowl game."
Jurich's statement mentioned nothing about any potential disciplinary action against Galloway for receiving and sharing the leaked information. Considering Wake Forest became aware of the leak prior to the game, it's not surprising that the Demon Deacons didn't run any of the plays that were leaked.
When Wake Forest first launched its investigation, Louisville coach Bobby Petrino issued a statement saying he knew nothing of the situation.
