The Oakland Raiders are parting ways with veteran linebacker Kevin Burnett.
The team is released the nine-year veteran with a failed physical designation after Burnett failed to receive medical clearance for training camp. Burnett sustained an ankle injury during offseason team activities.
Cutting the veteran will save the Raiders $3.375 million in cash and cap space, according to Brian McIntyre.
Coach Dennis Allen said in June that he "absolutely" expected Burnett to compete for a first-team role after starting all 16 games for Oakland in 2013. His absence leaves Sio Moore in the pole position to serve as the weakside 'backer when the team visits the New York Jets in Week 1.
Burnett has started 75 games over his NFL career and figures to get another look when healthy again. One potential fit: the Cowboys, who drafted Burnett in the second round back in 2005 and remain desperate for linebacker help.
