Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported Wednesday that the Jets will try to sign the free-agent tight end if he makes it through minicamp minus a setback to his surgically repaired (and, by now, almost bionic) knees.
Winslow is with the Jets on a tryout basis. He hasn't started an NFL game since 2011, but he had a cup of coffee with the New England Patriots last season.
If healthy, Winslow is a palpable upgrade over what the Jets have at that position. So much of what the Jets hope to do requires a pass-catching tight end. Nobody on the roster can replace what Dustin Keller brought to the offense, so adding Winslow to the mix is worth a gamble.
"What wasn't outstanding was the way we caught the football (on Tuesday)," Ryan told the Daily News. "We dropped a ton of balls. Catch the football. You're an NFL player, catch the football. You're paid to catch the football; we expect it (to be) caught. When the ball is there, catch the ball."
One target of Ryan's ire: Mike Sims-Walker. The former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver struggled during Tuesday's session, compelling Ryan to say, "He never jumped out at me the way Kellen did."
