Cameron, however, wasn't an overnight success story. The 2011 fourth-round draft pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the Browns are trying to keep him around long term.
ESPNCleveland's Tony Grossi notes that the Browns and Cameron have had long-term extension talks "without success." Cameron will be a candidate for a franchise tag next year barring a deal.
Perhaps it's wise to wait. While the Browns don't want to get in an Alex Mack-like contract stalemate, they might want to see how Cameron looks in new coordinator Kyle Shanahan's offense. Shanahan features the tight end, but Cameron's career took off when Norv Turner arrived in town last year.
The Browns are awash in salary-cap space, so they have plenty of room to complete a deal. If Cameron gets off to a strong start in his new system, we'd expect a long-term contract to arrive before next March. The Browns have a strong young nucleus of talent on both sides of the ball, and it doesn't pay to let talent walk away.
