Jets owner: 'Very confident' with Bowles, Maccagnan

Despite a four-game spiral that has Jets fans clawing at their eyes, New York won't make any changes in leadership.

Owner Woody Johnson told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport at the NFL Fall League Meeting in Houston on Wednesday that changes weren't coming to the team's leadership after a 1-5 start.

"We got 10 games to go. I'm very confident with (coach) Todd Bowles and (general manager) Mike (Maccagnan)," Johnson said unequivocally. "I think we've got an excellent team (of leaders). I really respect Todd, I know he's doing what he's going to do. It's football. He's a good coach. I have long-term confidence in him and in Mike and in their teams.

"That's the way I feel. Onward and outward, we've had a tough schedule, it's no excuse. We've been in some games. But Monday night was ... we gotta be better than that."

The Jets' 28-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in front of a national audience on Monday night jumpstarted the conversation about whether the team should bench Ryan Fitzpatrick for Geno Smith against the Ravens on Sunday.

After initially saying Fitzpatrick would remain the starter, Bowles on Tuesday left the door open for a change. It's not a shock that a coach would reconsider his starting quarterback after watching film and discussing it with bosses.

Quarterback isn't the only problem for Bowles and Maccagnan. The Jets are a flawed veteran team with few young standouts and little cap space in the near future. OverTheCap.com's Jason Fitzgerald wrote a great breakdown of how Gang Green compiled their current roster and possible moves going forward.

It won't be easy for the Jets to climb out of their current depressing situation. Johnson, however, plans to let Bowles and Maccagnan attempt to dig their way out.
