The Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to terms with defensive coordinator Mel Tucker on a new contract, a league source said Thursday.
Tucker has been the Jaguars' defensive coordinator for two seasons. He was the Cleveland Browns' coordinator under coach Romeo Crennel in 2008, and he has experience in a 3-4 scheme, which the Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers use. Both of those teams are looking for new defensive coordinators.
The Jaguars finished 27th in the NFL in total defense in 2010. They allowed 250.2 passing yards and 121.16 rushing yards per game.
Nevertheless, Tucker is held in high regard by the Jaguars' organization. And with coach Jack Del Rio now focused more on macro issues and less on the defense, Tucker's role with the team takes on added significance.
