Is Philip Rivers' arm strength suspect? Some say yes

As the San Diego Chargers' season turns uglier by the minute, questions continue to mount about the future of coach Norv Turner.

Jeremiah: Week 8 revelations

Daniel Jeremiah identifies three rising superpowers, an underachiever, an overachiever and a true freak of nature. **More ...**

His team managed just six points in Sunday's grim loss to the Cleveland Browns, and quarterback Philip Rivers suffered through another ineffective outing. Rivers is a puzzle. At age 30, his play should be peaking, but his production has tailed off in recent seasons despite a talented roster. Dwindling arm strength was a hot topic last season, and it has come back to haunt the veteran.

Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports writes that a handful of league executives and coaches have "suspicions" about the health of Rivers' throwing arm.

We saw Rivers float two deep passes that were intercepted in the team's Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos. He had two more underneath routes stolen in that Monday night disaster.

NFL.com and NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah observes that Rivers has adopted shoddy footwork.

Pro passers are taught to release the ball in rhythm or with a single hitch step, but Rivers was seen adding a second and third hitch step against Denver. It's no surprise he was late on throws against the Broncos. Jeremiah also saw Rivers struggling to reset his feet when forced to move around in the pocket when defenders came calling.

That's a problem for Rivers -- and for Turner -- as the Chargers continue to melt away in the AFC West.
