Injury roundup: Troy Polamalu, Ryan Shazier ruled out

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is making it a routine to rule out Troy Polamalu and Ryan Shazier on Tuesdays.

For the second straight week, Tomlin said neither Polamalu (sprained knee) nor Shazier (ankle) will play due to injury. Ike Taylor will also miss his eighth game after breaking his forearm.

The Steelers missed their playmakers last week in a 20-13 loss, allowing the New York Jets to run for 150 total yards and Michael Vick to toss two touchdown passes.

On Monday night, Pittsburgh faces the hapless Tennessee Titans, who will be starting rookie Zach Mettenberger for the third straight week.

Here are some other injuries we are following on Tuesday:

  1. The San Francisco 49ers suffered a huge blow, placing linebacker Patrick Willis on season-ending injured reserve with a toe injury.
  1. Elsewhere in the NFC West, the Seattle Seahawks will lose defensive stalwart Brandon Mebane for the season with a hamstring injury.
  1. Both Fred Jackson and Sammy Watkins are on the practice field for the Bills, per ESPN.com's Mike Rodak. That is a good sign in advance of Thursday's road game against the Miami Dolphins, exclusively on NFL Network.
  1. For Thursday Night Football's other team, the Dolphins' Cortland Finnegan (ankle) and Darryn Colledge (back) didn't practice Tuesday, per ESPN.com's James Walker.
  1. Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters Tuesday that Tashaun Gipson -- the NFL's interceptions leader -- was idle Tuesday, as he is dealing with some headaches and being checked for a possible concussion.
  1. Despite what the outside world saw Monday night, Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera insists Cam Newton is healthy. "I'm not sure where all that came from, but he's not injured," Rivera said Tuesday.

Rivera added that defensive tackle Star Lotulelei does not have a high ankle sprain, but more of a lower, basketball-type ankle sprain. The coach said Lotulelei's MRI was negative, but he will miss Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, per the Charlotte Observer's Joe Person. The defensive tackle should return after the team's bye.

  1. With Carson Palmer out for the season with a torn ACL, the Arizona Cardinals signed quarterback Ryan Lindley, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
  1. Jacksonville Jaguars rookie and top receiving target Allen Robinsonis out for the season with a stress fracture in his foot.
  1. Regarding his sprained ankle, Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall said on Showtime's Inside The NFL, "I'll be out there Sunday ready to roll."
