Elway on Von: The goal is always to get long-term deal

Two days after Von Miller authored one of the most dominant defensive performances in Super Bowl history, John Elway was discussing the plan to keep the star outside linebacker in Denver for the long haul.

Miller, 26, is scheduled to be a free agent next month. Elway, the team's general manager, said the team will work toward a new contract before another team can get near the All-Pro.

"The goal is always to get a long-term deal," Elway said, who added that it also is a priority to re-sign Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan. "That goes into the same process of trying to include everybody. Looking at it from the 20,000 foot view of how this team is going to look not only next year but two, three years down the line. ... Our goal is always to be competitive year in and year out and that's what we want to do."

Miller has a zero percent chance of playing elsewhere next year. If the two sides can't work out a new contract before free agency, the Broncos will use their franchise tag on Miller. They've used that safety net with wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and left tackle Ryan Clady in year's past.

"As far as my situation coming up, we have -- Mr. Elway, he's played in the National Football League, he's one of the best GMs that there is, we're here today because of him," Miller said, via ESPN.com. "And I have people representing my situation as well. It's going to be a peaceful thing. I'm not really worried about it."

Still, it doesn't seem as if Miller has completely ruled out leaving the Mile-High City if he doesn't get what he wants.

"I want to stay with the Broncos for 15-20 years, but money talks, right?" Miller said Tuesday while appearing on *The Ellen Show*.

Miller's performance against the Panthers -- which included 2.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles -- was perfect timing on multiple levels. If the Super Bowl MVP gets a new deal and isn't the highest-paid defensive player -- or close to it -- it might not be a peaceful conversation with his representation.
