Danny Amendola unlikely for New England Patriots

Nobody was targeted more by Tom Brady in New England's season opener than Danny Amendola, but the Patriots aren't likely to have the wide receiver on hand for Thursday night's showdown with the New York Jets.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Amendola is almost certain to be ruled out because of the groin injury he suffered during the first half of Sunday's 23-21 win over the Buffalo Bills, according to a source informed of his injury. The fifth-year pro left the field against Buffalo before returning to the lineup, but Amendola wasn't present at the Patriots' walkthrough Tuesday, per NFL Media's Albert Breer.

Breer noted that the team is awaiting additional opinions on Amendola's setback.

Until Amendola returns, it's a significant loss for the Patriots' young offense. Amendola hauled in 10 catches for 104 yards in a gutsy showing against the Bills. Fourteen of Brady's 52 pass attempts were aimed at the wideout, including a critical 10-yard completion on the game's winning drive.

Kenbrell Thompkins also got 14 targets from Brady, but the rookie hauled in just four of them. Amendola was the difference-maker Sunday.

Toss in running back Shane Vereen's wrist surgery, Zach Sudfeld's nagging hammy and the waiting game around Rob Gronkowski, and these Patriots are one banged-up bunch.

UPDATE: Amendola's status is uncertain beyond Week 2 as well, per the Boston Herald.
