Add another horse to the Ndamukong Suh race.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the San Diego Chargers are preparing to make a run at Suh, per sources informed of the team's plans.
The Chargers enter the $100 million sprint that is expected to include the Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions.
San Diego would be an interesting choice for Suh. Defensive coordinator John Pagano currently runs a 3-4 base set. He could view Suh as a movable piece, à la J.J. Watt. Suh is strong enough to hold his own on the inside, yet agile enough to shift outside when needed. Regardless of where he plays along the line the 28-year-old would immediately upgrade a weak run defense.
The Chargers currently have about $26 million in cap space for 2015 -- less than the likes of the Raiders and Jags. With Philip Rivers entering his 12th season at 33 years old the Chargers know there is urgency to reach the Super Bowl now.
With the three-day negotiating window currently open, teams will have a chance to gauge Suh's market. We expect him to become the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history. His price tag could end up in the $18 million per year range, NFL Media's Albert Breer reported, according to clubs involved.
Don't discount late additions to the fray. Last year zero people guessed the Saints would make the splurge singing of Jairus Byrd before it happened on the first day of free agency.
It's a long way from Tuesday and much has yet to come to pass.
