Chargers activating RB Najee Harris (eye) from non-football injury list

After more than a month of uncertainty, Najee Harris' near future is becoming clearer.

The Chargers are moving the running back from the non-football injury list to the active roster, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday.

Harris is recovering from injuries sustained in a fireworks accident that affected several attendees during a Fourth of July event in Antioch, California, causing him to miss the start of training camp. He returned in a limited fashion in mid-August, and a lack of notable news led many to believe he might not play much of a role in the early portion of the Chargers' 2025 season.

Instead, it sounds as if Harris could be back quite soon.

After four seasons in Pittsburgh, Harris joined the Chargers as a free agent in 2025, signing a one-year deal worth $5.25 million. Upon proving he's healthy and ready to play, Harris is slated to split carries with first-round pick Omarion Hampton. Hassan Haskins appeared to win the backup job in Harris' absence during the preseason in a backfield that also includes 2024 sixth-rounder Kimani Vidal.
