Buccaneers place once-starting QB Leftwich on injured reserve

TAMPA, Fla. -- Byron Leftwich's season is over after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed the backup quarterback on injured reserve with a sore right elbow.

The Bucs also announced Tuesday that they had signed quarterback Rudy Carpenter from the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.

The Bucs also released backup cornerback Mike Mickens and filled the roster spot by signing wide receiver Terrence Nunn from the New England Patriots' practice squad.

Leftwich opened the season as the Bucs' starting quarterback, but he was replaced by Josh Johnson after three games. Rookie Josh Freeman has since become the starter, and Leftwich had been listed as third on the depth chart.

Carpenter signed with the Cowboys in May as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State.
