Bills OC: 'Good chance' Herron is part of game plan

With both LeSean McCoy and Karlos Williams already ruled out, the Buffalo Bills' backfield is razor thin.

Boobie Dixon is slated to get the start, but is still dealing with the aftereffects of a calf injury. In Rex Ryan's ground-and-pound offense the Bills would need a back to share the load, even if Dixon were healthy.

The man who could very well end up leading the Bills in rushing attempts this week against the Tennessee Titans is Dan "Boom" Herron, a player Buffalo just signed this week.

"I think Boom is going to...you know there's a good chance that he's going to be a part of the game plan," said offensive coordinator Greg Roman, via the team's official website. "I really like what I see out of him, like what I hear out of him and he's picking things up pretty quickly."

Last season, Herron started three games for the Indianapolis Colts. The 26-year-old back compiled 351 yards on 78 carries (4.5 YPC) and a rushing score. He also added 21 receptions for 173 yards. Herron doesn't flash great burst and he's not going to be an every-down workhorse. But he showed last season, in small doses he can be a serviceable option out of the backfield.

Despite being signed Tuesday, Herron isn't worried about getting caught up on Roman's offense, due to the similarities to Indy's offense under Pep Hamilton (Hamilton and Roman were on Jim Harbaugh's staff at Stanford). "Boom" said he is ready when the Bills call his number Sunday.

"I definitely feel like I'm a hard-nosed, downhill runner," Herron said. "I like to get the tough yards. I feel like I can also break a long one as well. I'm just an all-around back."
