Auto racing pioneer thinks he can build concussion-reducing helmet

Friday's health and safety news from the world of football:

  • CBS Sports featured a University of Alabama-Birmingham researcher who is trying to create a safer football helmet after revolutionizing auto racing helmets.
  • KBTX-TV in College Station, Texas, reported that the Texas A&M University football team will be the latest school to use the Vector Mouth Guard, which will have sensors built in to detect dangerous hits. South Carolina, LSU and Kansas previously announced their football teams will use these mouth guards this year.
  • The Associated Press reported that a New Mexico Senate panel will debate a bill setting strict guidelines when a middle or high school student athlete could return after suffering a concussion.
