What You Need To Know
1) Beneficiaries of two first-round draft picks in 2024, the Cardinals were left wanting much more from Marvin Harrison Jr. and Darius Robinson. In total, Harrison’s 62 receptions for 885 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie are pretty solid, but many thought the No. 4 overall selection would be a superstar out of the gate. Harrison and quarterback Kyler Murray furthering their chemistry could well be the team’s prevailing storyline this season, and that will get going in earnest during camp. Robinson, picked 23 slots after Harrison last year, played in just six games because of a calf injury. This will be a pivotal camp for him, especially amid a revamped defensive front -- one that will offer him veterans to learn from and new faces to compete against for snaps.
2) One of the easiest players in the NFL to root for, Calais Campbell, 38, returning to the team he began his illustrious career with in 2008 is more than just a feel-great story. Campbell’s leadership is just as important an addition as his talent to a club looking for its first winning season since 2021. This is a pivotal season for the Monti Ossenfort-Jonathan Gannon regime and Campbell, pass rusher Josh Sweat and defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson should add some veteran moxie to a team lacking it outside of star safety Budda Baker. Gannon was hired for his defensive prowess coordinating the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, his Arizona D is finally stocked up -- at least on paper. It’s added some experienced talent and two high-profile rookies in defensive lineman Walter Nolen (first round; No. 16 overall) and cornerback Will Johnson (second; No. 47). Johnson has the ceiling to become a massive draft steal. How the Cards’ defensive additions mesh with the starting staples begins this summer.
3) James Conner joined Arizona in 2021 and has been a stellar fit who has exceeded his output and importance with the Pittsburgh Steelers for four years prior. He’s coming off career-high tallies in carries (236) and rushing yards (1,094), but is entering his age-30 season. 2024 third-rounder Trey Benson (63 carries for 291 yards) had a disappointing debut campaign, but if he finds his footing, could he push Conner for touches? It’ll be interesting to see how camp develops in the Arizona offensive backfield.
