Alabama Crimson Tide QB Luke Del Rio to transfer

Alabama backup quarterback Luke Del Rio, the son of Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, announced Wednesday via Twitter that he plans to transfer.

UA coach Nick Saban said during the season that Del Rio, a walk-on, had ascended to No. 3 on the depth chart behind AJ McCarron and longtime backup Blake Sims, but rumors of his transfer persisted with the Crimson Tide set to pit as many as half a dozen reserve quarterbacks in competition for the starting job in 2014, most of whom will be on hand for spring drills. Perhaps Del Rio saw some writing on the wall where the transfer subject is concerned.

Del Rio reportedly had scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Oregon State and Colorado State, but chose to walk-on at Alabama to begin his college career. As such, those could be potential landing spots for his next move. Former Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain is the head coach at CSU, although he had already left UA by the time Del Rio arrived. Nevertheless, a phone call from Saban to McElwain could be all it would take for Del Rio to make his way to Colorado State, where he would be far closer to his father. The CSU campus is roughly an hour drive to Denver.
