Aaron Berry arrested on suspicion of DUI; Lions miffed

At one stage earlier this month, the Detroit Lions accounted for five of the 21 player arrests in the NFL this offseason.

They've just added a sixth.

Lions cornerback Aaron Berry was arrested early Saturday morning in Harrisburg, Pa., on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Harrisburg City Police Department confirmed the DUI arrest to NFL.com and NFL Network, along with two counts of failure to render aid (leaving the scene of an accident).

WXYZ-TV first reported the incident Tuesday, before Berry issued a public apology.

"I want to offer a sincere apology to the Lions organization, Lions fans, the coaches and all my teammates for my actions this past weekend," Berry said in a statement posted on his agency's Facebook page. "This is not the example I want to set for young people and it's certainly not what my team and coaches expect from me. I promise to do everything in my power to make sure this never happens again. I understand these are just words and it will be my future actions that ultimately will speak for me."

A source told the TV station that Berry drove his car into a lineup of parked vehicles. He then got out of the car and began to walk away, per the source. A witness called the police, who arrived soon after, and Berry was arrested around 4:45 a.m.

NFL.com and NFL Network later obtained a Harrisburg City Police Department press release, which confirmed those details of the incident.

Berry was uncooperative with police during the booking process, one source told the TV station. Officials later told NFL.com and NFL Network that Berry refused to submit to a breathalyzer test and confirmed reports that a witness alerted police to the incident.

Berry, who's entering his third season with the Lions, was released and awaits arraignment.

Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was hosting a charity softball game in the area over the weekend, but it's not believed Berry took part, according to WXYZ-TV. The two played together at the University of Pittsburgh.

"We are extremely disappointed in the reports involving Aaron Berry and the incident in Pennsylvania this past weekend," the Lionssaid in statement released Monday. "This is not the standard of behavior we expect from any member of our organization. We have strongly and repeatedly emphasized the need to be accountable on and off the field, which makes this incident with Aaron all the more disappointing. We will have further comments regarding this situation when appropriate."
