Worker dies at 49ers' Levi's Stadium construction site

Construction of the San Francisco 49ers' new stadium has taken a tragic turn.

An elevator subcontractor at Levi's Stadium was killed Tuesday morning, Santa Clara police Lt. Kurt Clarke told CNN.com. The worker was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft, but it was unclear if the man fell or was crushed by an elevator car, NBCBayArea.com reported.

Workers at the site were sent home for the day, and the team released a statement:

"The 49ers organization was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the news at the construction site," the team said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy. The 49ers family has lost a teammate today."

NFL.com and NFL Network send our condolences to all affected by the incident.
