Sunday's key NFL injuries you need to know

We heard it repeated often during the long, ugly John Skelton-Kevin Kolb preseason: It doesn't matter who wins the starting job with the Arizona Cardinals because the offensive line is so bad. Neither quarterback, the theory went, would be able to stay healthy.

For once, conventional wisdom was right. Skelton hurt his ankle Sunday in the regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. It looks like a high ankle sprain, so this should be Kolb's team for a while. Then again, it may Ryan Lindley's team in a few weeks.

Here are 15 other injuries from Week 1 you should know about.

  1. Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Lockerhurt his left shoulder against the New England Patriots. He didn't return after suffering the injury in the fourth quarter, although he was seen throwing on the sidelines. Locker expressed confidence he could play next week.
  1. The Seattle Seahawks lost left tackle Russell Okung with a knee injury. Their passing game can't afford to lose him.
  1. Maurice Jones-Drew was forced to carry the load for the Jacksonville Jaguars when Rashad Jennings left with a knee injury against the Minnesota Vikings. Jennings didn't touch the ball after halftime.
  1. Washington Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon caught four passes, including an 88-yard touchdown, in just one quarter of action in a stunning win over the New Orleans Saints. Then he left with a foot injury. That's a very Pierre Garcon thing to do.
  1. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Dwight Freeneywill undergo an MRI on his ankle after an early departure in the game with the Chicago Bears.
  1. The Atlanta Falcons' franchise player, cornerback Brent Grimes, left his team's eventual win over the Kansas City Chiefs with a calf injury.
  1. NFL Network and NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported that X-rays came up negative on St. Louis Rams tackle Rodger Saffold's neck, but the starter will have to stay in the hospital overnight. He was carted off the field against the Detroit Lions on a stretcher.
  1. Chicago Bears starting cornerback Charles Tillmanleft Sunday's contest with a leg injury and quickly was ruled out by the team. Not a good sign.
  1. Miami Dolphins running back Daniel Thomas suffered a concussion against the Houston Texans, continuing a rough month for him.
  1. Titans middle linebacker Colin McCarthy left with an ankle injury and didn't return. He might be the best player on the Titans' defense.
  1. Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson will undergo an MRI on his knee after leaving Buffalo's debacle in New York.
  1. New Orleans Saints wide receiver Devery Henderson left in the second half with an apparent head injury.
  1. Bills wide receiver David Nelsoncould be out a long time with a knee injury. ProFootballTalk.com reported the Bills fear it's a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
  1. Lions rookie cornerback Bill Bentleysuffered a concussion, according to MLive.com.
  1. Darrelle Revis left the Jets' game early with a head injury, but reports suggested he was "fine" after the game.
