Agent Drew Rosenhaus reportedly will meet face-to-face with the Green Bay Packers on Monday in an effort to hammer out a new contract for cornerback Sam Shields.
Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Monday that Rosenhaus hopes to wrap up a long-term contract for Shields in time for this week's minicamp. The sides reportedly have been talking about a multiyear deal since before the 2013 NFL Draft.
Shields is a restricted free agent whom the Packers tendered at the second-round level in March, a designation worth $2.02 million for 2013. If the fourth-year veteran doesn't sign his tender by June 17, the Packers have the option to play hardball and reduce the deal to 110 percent of Shields' $540,000 price tag from 2012.
Shields -- who started eight regular-season games last season -- arguably is Green Bay's most talented cover man. ProFootballFocus graded him as the NFL's 14th-best corner and the league's eighth best against the pass, but durability was a concern for Shields last season.
The Packers haven't displayed much urgency in exploring a long-term pact for Shields -- he'd probably sign his tender if it boiled down to it -- but a face-to-face meeting bodes well for his return.
UPDATE: NFL.com's Albert Breer reported Monday that Shields signed his tender with the Packers. Shields' tender is worth $2,023,000.
