Robert Griffin III not just an athlete for Redskins

Robert Griffin III's second game as a pro ended in a 31-28 defeat against the St. Louis Rams, but for anyone tracking this young quarterback's progress, Sunday's showing was a reason for hope.

Breer: Do defenses stand a chance?

There was a record number of points in Week 1. Can the offensive revolution be slowed? Albert Breer examines. **More ...**

The Washington Redskins rookie put up 200-plus yards through the air and ran for another 82 on the ground, accounting for three touchdowns and keeping the Redskins alive and kicking to the bitter end.

While a handful of veteran passers league-wide continue to assimilate to new settings and schemes, RG3 already has assumed control of this offense.

Long before he was drafted, Griffin was incorrectly tagged as a run-first signal-caller more comfortable toting the ball around than operating from the pocket.

The laziest comparisons called him the second coming of Michael Vick. The truth is that he's a patient passer -- excellent vision, too -- with exceptional ability to run the ball when he's asked to.

Give credit to coach Mike Shanahan, who continues to borrow concepts from Baylor's offense, handing Griffin the reins to make smart decisions on the field. On a fourth-quarter drive, we saw RG3 confidently choose the run over the pass when it made sense -- and when the Rams had little chance to stop him.

A loss is a loss, but Griffin completely changes this offense and that's what excites us about his early arc in the NFL.
