Report: LaMichael James joins 49ers' workouts

LaMichael James is in the building.

The running back, who was in his home state of Texas for the start of the San Francisco 49ers' offseason work, joined the team this week, the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reported.

By missing the early workouts, James forfeited a $50,000 workout bonus, per Barrows.

James skipping the voluntary workouts was met with reports that the scatback was hoping to be traded away from the crowded 49ers backfield.

General manager Trent Baalke said last month the team wasn't worried about James missing workouts. Baalke said James' absence was due to the recent birth of his child.

James rejoins a backfield that got even more crowded while he was changing diapers. The 49ers added second-round pick Carlos Hyde to a stacked rushing attack that already included the seemingly immortal Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and the recovering Marcus Lattimore.

Barrows added that there is no word whether Lattimore, still rehabbing from ACL surgery, will be part of the 49ers' rookie minicamp this weekend.

The 5-foot-9 James was primarily a kick and punt returner last season. He'll have some competition for those duties as well with the addition of speedy fourth-round receiver Bruce Ellington.

James showed up for work, but whether he will keep a job in San Francisco remains to be seen.
