Report: Danny Amendola on Philadelphia Eagles' radar

Now that Danny Amendola's St. Louis Rams career appears to be over, he's free to pursue other opportunities once the free agency bell rings on Tuesday.

If the New England Patriots have designs on Amendola as their backup plan to Wes Welker, they are going to have competition. A person with direct knowledge of the team's free agency plans told Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia that the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in pursuing Amendola.

The fit makes sense on several levels. New Eagles coordinator Pat Shurmur jump-started Amendola's stalled NFL career by signing him off the Rams' practice squad when he was running that offense back in 2009.

As SI.com's Peter King pointed out last week, head coach Chip Kelly's up-tempo offense requires fast, smart players with versatility. The scheme often incorporates four wide receivers, and Amendola shines in the slot in two-receiver sets.

Per Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, it's "unclear how hard" the Eagles plan to go after Amendola. Despite missing 20 games over the past two seasons, he reportedly is seeking a salary on par with Brian Hartline's $6.1 million per year.
