St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam's battle to become the first openly gay player to make an NFL roster got a boost during the team's 21-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Sam earned his first NFL sack in the fourth quarter. Mimicking the pass-rush ability he displayed during college, Sam bent the edge and dropped backup quarterback Matt Flynn for a 10-yard loss. The sack forced the Packers to settle for a 49-yard field goal.

Sam also earned a solo tackle and a second quarterback hit against Green Bay.
