The offensive tackle market is rapidly clearing up.
The Oakland Raiders will re-sign left tackle Donald Penn to a two-year deal worth $14 million, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday. Roughly $7 million is guaranteed in the first year of the deal.Â
Penn was scheduled to fly to New York today to visit with the Giants. Now, that meeting won't happen.
Penn is the latest to grab a chair in this game of Offensive Tackle Musical Chairs, which has heated up over the past 24 hours.
The Steelers kicked off the game Tuesday by signing veteran Ryan Harris to compete with Alejandro Villanueva for their starting left tackle gig. The Jaguarsthen nabbed former Pittsburgh tackle Kelvin Beachum. Now, Penn is off the board.
The biggest fish remaining in the free-agent offensive tackle pool is Russell Okung. The Giants, Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks are all in the running for Okung's services.
Retaining Penn is another coup for Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie.
The 32-year-old blocker had a solid two seasons in Oakland and is the picture of durability, having made 140 consecutive starts dating back to 2007.
Keeping Penn on Derek Carr's blind side will ensure continuity on the Oakland offensive line. The signing also allows the Raiders to keep high-priced free agent Kelechi Osemele at guard, giving the Raiders one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Somewhere Carr is smiling ear-to-ear.
