Michael Crabtree, 49ers hope to reach extension

While right guard Alex Boonecontinues hissummer-long holdout, the San Francisco 49ers are busy working on extension for other key players.

Now that Colin Kaepernick and Glenn Dorsey are under contract, the 49ers are turning their attention to a new deal for No. 1 receiver Michael Crabtree, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday's edition of NFL Total Access.

Both sides have moved closer to a deal. If they are going to find common ground this year, it will likely happen in the next two weeks before the season starts, per Rapoport.

Crabtree realizes his injury history will keep him from reaching the upper tier of base salary and guaranteed money for wide receivers. Much like Kaepernick, he is willing to allow incentives in his next contract because he is confident he will reach them, Rapoport adds.

The 49ers have done well to lock up key players to team-friendly contracts before the leverage changes hands.

It will be interesting to see if that approach leaves them with enough salary-cap space to extend Pro Bowl talents such as tight end Vernon Davis and left guard Mike Iupati while the perceived value is still high.
