If a millenial wide receiver averages more than seven targets in his last three games but doesn't play with himself in fantasy football, does he make a sound?
Patriots wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell is blowing up and he doesn't even know it. The rookie out of Georgia has seen his playing time and ensuing stats increase after a slow start to the season. Since Week 11, Mitchell has averaged 7.3 targets, 5.7 receptions and 74 receiving yards, catching three scores in three Patriots wins.
"I don't know much about it," Mitchell told reporters Friday, per the Providence Journal. "I know I have family members mention it, but I never know what they're talking about. I'm not sure how that works. If someone said it, I'd probably have no idea what it means."
Who can blame the kid? Drafted in the fourth round, Mitchell is now busy playing an integral part in New England's march toward the postseason and their 99th consecutive AFC East title. With Rob Gronkowski out for the season, Danny Amendola oft-injured and Julian Edelman playing slightly unlike himself, Tom Brady and the Pats have been in the need of a dynamic, dependable downfield element. Mitchell has played that role to a T over the last three weeks, lining up on 73 percent of New England's snaps since Week 11.
For those still uninitiated, the 23-year-old will look to break out on prime time against the Ravens on Monday Night Football. Baltimore has allowed the second-most touchdowns by wide receivers this season (19), but may frustrate Brady, thanks to the return of safety Jimmy Smith. However this week's clash turns out for either team, at least we know Mitchell won't be tinkering with his roster before game time.
"That's cool," Mitchell said of his fantasy prowess, "but I really have no idea about fantasy football."
To which backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett jokingly responded from across the room, "I've got you on my team!"
At least his locker room is taking notice. It's about time everyone else does.
