Leon Washington released by New England Patriots

The New England Patriots signed Leon Washington this offseason to provide pop to their return game.

The Patriots pulled the plug Sunday when they released the veteran return man, a person informed of the transaction told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The Associated Press first reported the release.

Washington was on the roster bubble the last several weeks with backup running back LeGarrette Blount and defensive back Devin McCourty getting a chance to win the returner job. With a deep group of running backs, the Patriots couldn't afford the luxury of keeping another return man.

The former New York Jet and Seattle Seahawk has seen his production and attempts dwindle the last several years. Washington still has some life in his legs, so he might still find a job for a team in need of a returner.
