Johnny Manziel leaves Manning camp with illness

Johnny Manziel was in attendance when the 2013 Manning Passing Academy began. He wasn't there for the finish.

A camp spokesman confirmed the Heisman Trophy-winning Texas A&M quarterback known as Johnny Football left the camp early after an unspecified illness caused Manziel to miss assigned meetings and practice sessions. The annual passing academy is hosted by Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.

Brooks: Johnny Manziel's promise

Johnny Manziel showed something before leaving the Manning Passing Academy that impressed Bucky Brooks. **More ...**

"Johnny Manziel did participate in some activities in the 2013 Manning Passing Academy as a college counselor/coach," the statement read (via ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen). "After missing and being late for practice assignments, Johnny explained that he had been feeling ill. Consequently, we agreed that it was in everyone's best interest for him to go home a day early."

Peyton Manning downplayed Manziel's premature departure.

"I enjoyed meeting Johnny," Manning said. "I can remember a 20-year-old Eli missing a meeting and catching some flak. We always have counselors who leave early. Johnny was great with the campers for the time he was here. He had to leave early. I wish him the best and I want him to come back as a counselor next year."

It was Manziel's first appearance as a college counselor/coach at the camp, which was held at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. Manziel had attended the passing academy twice as a camper while in high school.

UPDATE: Manziel's father, Paul, told The Dallas Morning News via text that Manziel is at home "resting and recuperating from dehydration." He will attend SEC media days on Wednesday. Hmmm, we wonder what he'll be asked about?
