ESPN reported Tuesday that linebacker James Andersonwas released Tuesday. Anderson is a good player who got paid like a great one, and no longer had a role on the team. He received a five-year, $22 million contract two years ago.

Anderson's release could be a good sign for Jon Beason. There was some thought Beason could be cut, but Anderson's release is a sign the Panthers expect Beason and Thomas Davis to start on the outside, with Luke Kuechly at middle linebacker.

UPDATE: Anderson confirmed on Twitter that he has been released by the Panthers.
