Delone Carter is headed to Baltimore.
The Ravens on Wednesday acquired the running back from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for wide receiver David Reed, both teams announced. As with most late-summer trades, it represents a fresh start for two players on the roster bubble with their former teams.

Carter was entrenched in a battle with Donald Brown for a spot in Indy behind Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard. Brown's job appears safe, while Carter joins a Ravens backfield that might be tough to crack.
Three-time Pro Bowl selection Ray Rice will lose carries to Bernard Pierce this season, but third-string backs rarely see action in Baltimore. Anthony Allen -- maybe the biggest loser in this trade -- had just 16 carries last season. In 2011, Vonta Leach was third among Ravens runners with a mere 12 carries.
Carter has amassed 499 yards and five scores over his first two seasons, but his 3.8 yards per carry paint an accurate picture of a one-dimensional ball carrier. The third-year pro doesn't offer much in the passing game and is coming off shoulder surgery in May.
Reed, a fifth-round draft pick in 2010, has just five career catches but brings some value as a kick returner. He looms as nothing more than a special-teamer for the Colts as long as Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton and Darrius Heyward-Bey stay healthy.
