Collin Klein will be invited to join tight ends at combine

Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein will be asked to work out with the tight ends Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to's Gil Brandt.

Klein has been outspoken in his wish not to change positions, and it remains to be seen if he'll accept the invite. Klein will fully participate in the quarterbacks' workout Sunday in Indianapolis.

Earlier Friday, Klein reaffirmed his intention to make it in the NFL as a quarterback.

"That's my heart," Klein told reporters at the combine. "I know I have the tools to do that, and I know I bring a lot to the team at that position. That's what I want to do."

It was reported Sunday that teams wanted to see Klein work out at tight end, but he was resisting it. As a quarterback, Klein has been projected as a late-round flier or an undrafted free agent.

Klein was a Heisman Trophy finalist in his senior season at Kansas State, but a poor performance at the East-West Shrine Game provided further doubt his quarterback ability can translate to the next level.

Minnesota quarterback MarQueis Gray, who also played receiver for the Gophers, also will be asked to work out with the tight ends, according to Brandt. In all, 19 players will be asked to try multiple positions at the combine.

UPDATE: Klein's agent told The Denver Post on Friday that his client will not take part in tight end drills at the combine: "Collin is excited to work out at the combine as a quarterback to demonstrate to the powers that be he is an NFL quarterback," Peter Schaffer said.

Klein also said he's only focusing on being a signal-caller: "I want to pursue every door that I possibly can at quarterback and until everyone one of those are close I'm not considering anything else," he said.
