No quarterback has started all 16 games in a season for the Cleveland Browns since long-lost Tim Couch did it in 2001.
Just two weeks into the current campaign, Brandon Weeden is threatening to extend that ugly trend after spraining his right (throwing) thumb in a 14-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Browns coach Rob Chudzinski acknowledged Monday that Weeden might not be ready to play against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.
"We'll see how (the thumb) responds in the next couple days," Chudzinski told reporters.
If Weeden can't go, the assumption is Jason Campbell will play against the Vikings, but Chud was decidely vague on that topic Monday.
"I'm gonna keep all our options open," he said. "Right now, obviously, we have two options and that's Jason and Brian (Hoyer), both."
Asked if Hoyer -- the presumed No. 3 -- might start, Chudzinski didn't swat it down.
"Like I said, I'm gonna leave both those options open," Chud said.
After the Browns spent all summer floating the idea that Weeden and Campbell were battling for the starting job, it's fairly remarkable that Campbell isn't the obvious No. 2. Maybe Chudzinski just sees what we see: None of these quarterbacks stand out, a problem dating to the days of Couch.
