Carolina Panthers quell DeAngelo Williams rumors

As Thursday's extended NFL trade deadline came and went, the Carolina Panthers are stood pat.

"We are not trading anyone," Panthers interim general manager Brandon Beane told The Associated Press prior to the deadline passing.

Teams came calling about Steve Smith, according to reports, but the veteran wide receiver said he'd rather retire than play elsewhere. There were whispers about running back DeAngelo Williams generating interest, but the Panthers are choosing to keep the roster intact.

Beane is filling the shoes of Marty Hurney, who was dismissed as general manager this month after serving in the role since 2002. The Panthers' season has spun out of control after spending the summer talking proudly about the playoffs.

No changes today, perhaps, but they are coming in Carolina.
