Marshall: Geno really punched adversity in the face

The New York Jets are back where they started.

Geno Smith is the starter at quarterback and Ryan Fitzpatrick is the backup. This, of course, was Todd Bowles' initial plan last summer before IK Enemkpali shattered Smith's jaw with a sucker punch over a $600 plane ticket. It took 14 months for Smith to get his job back, and it's debatable how long he'll hold onto the gig as the 1-5 Jets begin to look to the future during another lost season.

But for now, Geno is the guy and his Jets teammates will rally around the new (old) QB1. Brandon Marshall, who, prior to the infamous IK knockout, actually lived with Smith and talked him up as an ascendant star, was asked about how Smith has matured.

Marshall's choice of words, intentional or not, were fitting.

"It's been amazing to see this guy grow and really punch adversity in the face," Marshall told reporters.

These are your 2016 New York Jets.
