Jags QB Blake Bortles gets blindsided by Cam Jordan

These are not easy days to be Blake Bortles.

The fourth-year Jaguars quarterback is attempting to rejuvenate a once promising career at the same time his head coach is telling reporters stuff like, "We want to run literally every play." Bortles' five-pick meltdown in practice last weekend is unlikely to cause Jaguars leadership to move off their run-first philosophy in 2017.

Meanwhile, insurgents approach from all directions. During an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Wednesday, Saints defensive end Cam Jordan invoked Bortles' name while explaining how Drew Brees helps the New Orleans defense.

"You're not going to face more of a top-tier quarterback than Drew," Jordan began, his Blake stake hidden beneath an overcoat. "That rapidly helps the learning curve. When you're talking about, you know, Drew's able to look somebody off or see something down the field and able to adjust those throws, that's only going to help their young corners. When you talk about the linebacker corps, you talk about Manti Te'o, A.J. Klein, Craig Robertson, you talk about Steph [Stephone Anthony], who's entering his third year. We're just talking about going against our offense, it can only help us.

"It's not like we're going against Blake Bortles here. It's not like Drew's giving picks away. We're talking about a guy who's a perennial elite."

Couple things here. First, let's calm down about Brees serving as some kind of secret weapon for the Saints defense. This is the same unit that finished 27th, 31st and 31st in total defense in the past three seasons. Help the learning curve more, Drew!

Second, Bortles has to watch out. We are approaching pejorative verb territory here. You don't want to become shorthand when players and coaches are attempting to describe a turnover-afflicted quarterback. "Damn, Joey really Bortles'd it out there today."

Just a shaky legacy all around.
