Open Funding Opportunities

The NFL-NFLPA Pain Management Committee (PMC) is currently accepting applications for $1 million in research funding for projects studying potential pain management alternatives to opioids. This Request for Proposal (RFP) process is aimed at supplementing the PMC's knowledge about pain management and the potential effects of non-pharmacologic treatments and cannabinoids on athletic performance in elite football players. Applications are due July 31, 2021.

The NFL Research and Innovation Committee is composed of independent and NFL-affiliated medical professionals and focuses on issues relevant to the health and safety of active NFL players.

Scientific Advisory Board

In 2016, through its Play Smart. Play Safe. initiative, the NFL developed the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) comprised of leading independent researchers, doctors, scientists and clinicians to allocate $40 million in medical research funding primarily dedicated to neuroscience.

Past Research Funding Opportunities

Over the past few years, the NFL has awarded $35 million in funding for medical research to advance understanding of neuroscience and injury. The funding opportunities listed below are now closed.
