Fitzpatrick suffered torn ligaments in his thumb and will undergo an MRI on Monday, coach Todd Bowles told the media after the game. The veteran quarterback injured his thumb following a scramble on the Jets' first drive and was initally ruled out.
Geno Smith came in to replace Fitzpatrick, but left briefly in the fourth quarter with left shoulder and abdomen issues, Bowles added. Despite being ruled out, Fitzpatrick returned for two plays before Smith finished the game -- the Jets had no other quarterbacks on the active roster. Smith told reporters that he is "pretty confident" that he'll be ready to play next week, but will still undergo further evaluation.
This was Smith's first appearance of the season after going into training camp as the starter. He sat out the start of the year with a broken jaw, which he infamously suffered at the hands of former Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali in camp. When Smith became fully healthy after Week 2, Bowles assured that Fitzpatrick would remain the starter due to his good play.
