Roseman: Eagles would like to have Sam Bradford back

Uncertainty reigns supreme at the quarterback position in Philadelphia, where the Eagles must decide whether to stick with incumbent Sam Bradford or go in a different direction under new coach Doug Pederson.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported this week that Pederson views Chase Daniel -- a free-agent-to-be who spent the last three seasons with the coach in Kansas City -- as "more than a backup". Where does that leave Bradford, who delivered a decidedly middling performance under Chip Kelly in 2014?

On a podcast hosted by the Eagles' team site, Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman kept a tight lid on the situation.

"We've all been clear that we like Sam, and we'd like to have him back. It goes then between all of us and whether we can figure something out that makes sense on both sides," said Roseman, via PhillyMag.com. "Sometimes we get into a situation where we sit here and it will make sense from the team's perspective but when you're talking about a negotiation, it's also got to work for the other side and the player, and we understand that.

"But hopefully this will all work out and we'll look at that depth chart when we line up here in July and be really excited about the position."

On the surface, this seems like a light endorsement of Bradford. But in truth, Roseman's comments are a hazy as possible, with good reason. Expect a similar answer when Roseman or Pederson step to the podium at the NFL Scouting Combine next week.

The Eagles have until March 1 to apply the franchise tag on Bradford. It's difficult to imagine any team locking Bradford into a $20 million, one-year deal -- even as a placeholder -- given Bradford's mediocre production and injury history. Reports around the league suggest the Eagles don't plan to go down that road.
